Open letter to Al Gore: Defend Science
Dear Mr Al Gore,
First of all, let me congratulate you to the Nobel Peace Prize award!
Secondly, I urge you to sign the Defend Science statement. I know that others have already asked you to do this, so I don’t think I need to tell you much more about the statement as such.
I just want to point out that it won’t hurt your career to sign the statement. You have received much credibility from your work against global warming, and the Nobel Prize, of course, only adds to that credibility. You are much respected in the world and in the US. I assume that you are not interested in pursuing another election for US president, because you actually have a greater potential to impact world polity as an independent opinion leader than you would have being elected the most powerful man in the world.
So if the Christian Right movement in the US would not approve of your consignment of the statement, even if the opinion in the US would disapprove of it (which I hope they wouldn’t), you still have nothing to lose. You would still be the well-respected opinion leader you are today. Your work for science and understanding would not be affected.
But signing the statement would be a great way to advance that goal for science and understanding. Several other Nobel Laureates have already signed it. Why don’t you join them as well?
